We all have goals we will like to achieve, and there are many ways one could go about them. In the pursuit of your goals, we can sometimes slip into bad behaviors.

If you’re not careful, these behaviors can become habits. We all know bad habits are hard to break, so before you engage in them, I have compiled some of the best advice I could find about chasing your dreams.

These are some of the most agreed-upon tips from countless high-achieving people.

ACCOUNTABILITY :

Most people do a bad job of holding themselves accountable. We tend to be easy on ourselves, especially if the goal we have set for ourselves is difficult.

This is why you should share your goals with a friend or loved one. Make sure to pick someone that won’t be easy on you if you fail to commit. You are going to need someone who will give you some tough love.

Typically, most people will feel bad letting down their friend or loved one. We are more likely to let ourselves down than someone else. This is why accountability works.

WRITE YOUR GOALS DOWN :

Putting pen to paper about your goals is one of the best things you can do. Write down your goals on a piece of paper and hang it somewhere you’ll see every day.

Doing this will make you 42 percent more likely to achieve your goals. You can check out the stats here.

Writing it down forces you to focus on the task ahead and motivate you to achieve your goal every day.

The concept of writing down your goals isn’t new, many successful people practice it, and it’s been proven to work.

SET MINI-GOALS :

We all know about people making New Year’s resolutions and failing to see it through. The issue for many people is that they only look at the end goal and not the mini-steps to achieving their goal.

I’ll give an example: a person wants to lose 40 pounds in six months. They exercise every day, but two weeks in, and there is barely any visible progress. They quickly get discouraged and stop working out consistently.

This can happen to everyone. We’ve all had goals that we’ve fallen short on because we saw no initial progress. So how do we stop this from happening to us ? by setting min-goals.

Using the example of losing weight. The goal is to lose 40 pounds. How do we go about this? You set a daily or weekly goal.

This is how you’ll stay motivated to lose 40 pounds in the long run. Instead of thinking of the end goal, you have to worry about meeting your daily goals or weekly goals.

When you do meet your daily or weekly goals, do not forget to celebrate them. No matter how small, it is imperative to congratulate yourself on achieving your goals, even if it’s just a glass of wine.

PICK THREE ROLE MODELS:

Picking role models is a must for self-development. We all need standards to strive towards or aspire to. Role models are essential for this purpose; they are relatable and show us how it’s possible.

It can be hard to strive for something and believe it’s possible for you without seeing it. Humans are very visual creatures, and at times we need to see it to believe it.

No matter your situation and what you strive for, someone has done what you want to do. Find them and model what they did to get to where there are.

Why do I say three role models? Because one person’s method may not work for you, but others will. I am not a big fan of following too many role models. Too many cooks do spoil the dish after all. It must not be three but do your best not to pick too many.

DEDICATE TIME FOR OTHER AREAS OF YOUR LIFE.

In the pursuit of your goals, you may get so laser-focused that you forget everything else. It’s good to be focused but do not get so focused that you neglect everything else.

Make sure to set time aside for the people in your life. Visit your friends and family, go to the cinemas, go to your favorite restaurant. When you do all this, it gives you a chance to cool off from the monotonous grind of achieving your goals.

It also makes sure you connect to the people in your life. Out of sight is out of mind for most people except maybe your parents.

Why does this work?

Because it gives you time off, thereby renewing your energy when you decide to get back on your goals.

DEVELOP THICK SKIN.

This is something everyone must develop to survive the hustle of life. In the pursuit of your dreams, you will be faced with some rejection or criticism. Want to establish a business? Most likely, your first few months won’t be profitable. Want to write a book? Your first draft is going to suck; your first released music might get no attention.

It’s hard when you put in all those hours to your dream, and you get crickets or criticism. People might try to discourage you, and not all of them are haters. This could come from people you love very much because they see you struggling with not much progress.

It doesn’t always come from a malicious place. This is hard to deal with, and the only way I know to preserve this is with thick skin. You will have to stubborn enough to achieve your goals, despite the naysayers and discouragement from outside and within.

Here is a great blog I found on how you can develop thick skin.

Now there are a lot more things you can do to achieve your goals. However, I am positive if you practice this, you will healthily achieve your goals.

I want you to have the end goal in sight as you go through your mini goals and keep persevering. When you get to accomplish it finally, you’ll be filled with a new sense of pride and confidence.

I can still remember how it felt when I finally got my dream job after searching for 5 months. In conclusion, I wish you all the best in the pursuit of your goals. Keep at it, good luck!
